SUSTAINABILITY & RESPONSIBILITY

Designed and crafted by local makers in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

At Daina Hugh, sustainability and transparency are not trends, they are guiding principles we embed into every part of our process. We understand that claiming to be entirely sustainable can feel contradictory in an industry rooted in constant newness. That said, we are committed to creating garments that transcend seasons,  intentionally designed to endure in quality, relevance, and craftsmanship.

Our collections are proudly designed and made in New Zealand, and this informs our desire to support local makers, reduce waste, and honour the landscape we’re fortunate to call home.

Production is thoughtfully divided between local makers in Auckland, New Zealand, each chosen for their expertise, working conditions, and alignment with our values. Every piece is quality checked by ourselves before dispatch. This model supports us well for now. Should we ever expand to offshore production, our priority will remain transparency, and we’ll be sure to keep you informed every step of the way.

We believe in honesty in how we make, package, and deliver. By sharing our practices openly, we aim to give our community a more meaningful understanding of who we are and how we contribute to the broader conversation around fashion and responsibility.

We’re the first to say: we’re not perfect. But we are intentional. We take this journey seriously, making considered changes where we can, and remaining open to growth.

If you have questions, ideas, or insights on how we can do better, we’d love to hear from you at customercare@dainahugh.com. This is a collective journey and we’re honored to walk it with you.

Design Philosophy

Our design philosophy is rooted in the idea of restraint, creating fewer, better pieces. We do not follow trends or seasons, but instead pursue forms that feel enduring: garments that live in your wardrobe, not just in your memory.

Each collection is an exercise in refinement -  a conscious decision to design slowly, sparingly, and with clarity. Our hope is that this way of working not only reduces waste, but also encourages a more mindful approach to dressing.

Diversity & Representation

Daina Hugh is committed to supporting equity and representation within our industry and community.

As an independent label, we are in a position to shape our world, from who we choose to work with, to how we platform and celebrate diverse perspectives.

We are committed to:

Ensuring visible and equal representation of diverse women in all partnerships, campaigns, and creative collaborations.

Actively engaging diverse creatives across photography, styling, casting, and events

Using our platform to highlight intelligent, powerful, creative voices we admire

Remaining open to dialogue and feedback from our wider community

These values inform both our internal decisions and external expressions. We know there is always more to do,  and we’re committed to doing the work.

Make

All pieces are designed, developed, and sampled in our Mt Eden studio, with patterns created in-house by our long-time pattern-maker. We are proud to work with a close network of local makers and independent sewers, and we continue to support boutique outworkers in Aotearoa, each selected for their craftsmanship and working environments.

Integrity in make is not negotiable, it is the foundation of every piece we produce.

Fabric

Where possible, we source fabrics through a local supplier who specialises in high-end deadstock, repurposing premium materials that would otherwise go to waste.

We are intentional about selecting textiles that reflect the highest standards in innovation, longevity, and finish. As our brand evolves, we are actively exploring ways to increase our use of recycled and regenerative fibers, with the aim of integrating more sustainable options across our collections.
